Exercise Physiology

In this course, we discuss how our body systems respond to different types of exercise - think endurance exercise like running a 5k vs. strength and power exercise like lifting weights. This includes topics like fat vs. carbohydrate utilization, how and why we breathe more, how our heart rate and blood pressure changes, and what hormonal changes occur with both short-term and long-term habitual exercise. 

Course style: Long-form

Intended course length: 6 weeks

Expected class time: 2 hours per week (1 hour per class; 2 classes per week)

  • Fuel utilization with different types of exercise

  • Oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production 

  • Lactate production

  • Exercise thresholds 

  • Heart rate and blood pressure regulation with different types of exercise
